"A striking success…the account of the White House years is absorbing, the account of Mary Lincoln's life as a widow utterly compelling." —New York TimesThis definitive biography of Mary Todd Lincoln beautifully conveys her tumultuous life and times. A privileged daughter of the proud clan that founded Lexington, Kentucky, Mary fell into a stormy romance with the raw Illinois attorney Abraham Lincoln. For twenty-five years the Lincolns forged opposing temperaments into a tolerant, loving marriage. Even as the nation suffered secession and civil war, Mary experienced the tragedies of losing three of her four children and then her husband. An insanity trial orchestrated by her surviving son led to her confinement in an asylum. Mary Todd Lincoln is still often portrayed in one dimension, as the stereotype of the best-hated faults of all women. Here her life is restored for us whole.

At this time of writing, The Ebook Mary Todd Lincoln: A Biography has garnered 9 customer reviews with rating of 5 out of 5 stars. Not a bad score at all as if you round it off, it’s actually a perfect TEN already. From the looks of that rating, we can say the Ebook is Good TO READ!

The best thing for me about this book was that it put many of Mary Lincoln's eccentric habits into the context of the day and time she lived in. It made it easier to be sympathetic to her when you realize that many people in the 1800's were into spiritualism and that a person (mainly women) could be put into an insane asylum on the word of a male relative--in this case her son. When you boil down the reasons why she was institutionalized, it was basically for "shopping too much and talking too much". Those are my words, but a fairly accurate description of what her son found wrong with her. If that held true today, 90% of the women in the world would be institutionalized! The book also does a good job of explaining how her background of many losses led to some of her rather bizarre behavior. She probably wasn't an easy person to live with, but her fame caused every word and action to be scrutinized and broadcast to a public who wanted to believe the worst. This book connected a lot of the dots between what seemed like unusual behavior for her to what many other less famous people did all the time in that era.
